Training Program for Microenterprise Lending Agencies in Jamaica

How can institutional weaknesses of MSME lending institutions be addressed?

This paper presents a multi donor funded training programme developed for the staff of micro- and small-scale enterprise (MSE) lending institutions in Jamaica. It:

  • Intends to address identified institutional weaknesses and improve the operating efficiencies of these institutions;
  • Notes that all the institutions are experiencing similar difficulties because of the standardization of the MSE lending methodology used in Jamaica. These include costly and lengthy loan appraisals, high arrears and loan delinquency;
  • Concludes that the future success and viability of these institutions depends on building capacity and financial competence through training and technical assistance.
