Digitally Enabled Climate Finance

Access and delivery through mobile and digital technologies in low- and middle-income countries

This flagship report by the GSMA ClimateTech program provides emerging insights on the role of mobile and digital technology in accessing and delivering climate finance in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Drawing from desk research and stakeholder consultations, this report presents the types of climate finance and models that are ready for digital innovation. Deep dives into different technologies and business models offer more in-depth analysis and considerations to strengthen future climate finance interventions.

The report is unique to the climate finance space on four fronts:

  1. It explores the various definitions of climate finance and consequent climate finance mechanisms.
  2. It discusses the different enablers of digital climate finance in LMICs which influence the flow of climate finance across existing mechanisms and governance systems.
  3. It showcases climate finance models and best practices for how mobile and digital technologies can ensure vital funds reach people and communities most vulnerable to climate change.
  4. Finally, it provides recommendations on investment and implementation of digital-enabled climate finance initiatives in LMICs.
