Download21 pages

This paper presents results of a baseline survey conducted on 1066 households in the Medak district of Andhra Pradesh, India.

Households were selected based on their eligibility to receive a particular asset transfer intervention. The study grouped the data into treatment, control and dropout categories. Descriptive statistics for the three groups included socio-demographics, living conditions, government schemes, household asset details, use of time, womens mobility, political awareness and access to various functionaries, physical health, hygiene conditions, dowry details, mental health, income and other financial details, social integration details, monthly consumption expenditure and children-related outcomes. Survey findings indicate that most households were:

  • Hindus, others were Muslims or Christians;
  • Belonging to scheduled castes, backward castes and scheduled tribes;
  • Nuclear, with a household size of less than four members;
  • Illiterate and engaged in some sort of occupation;
  • Living in houses with an average 1.5 rooms, and reported that their houses leaked during rains.

Finally, sources of drinking water were mostly taps, tube wells and hand pumps. Most households shared their source of drinking water with other households in the locality.
