Sharing Knowledge to Improve Programs
Strengthening knowledge sharing to improve program effectiveness

This paper describes a pilot project that facilitated knowledge sharing among CAREs Village Savings and Loans (VS&L) programs. CAREs VS&L methodology is a critical component of its economic development and livelihood security efforts. CARE launched its VS&Ls for Sustainable Livelihoods (VSL) pilot project to extend the knowledge of VS&L to poor communities worldwide. VSL:
- Aimed to facilitate rapid, accurate and reiterative knowledge sharing among VS&L practitioners;
- Took a bottom-up approach to knowledge sharing;
- Conducted assessments at the grassroots level with VS&L practitioners within CARE and its partner organizations;
- Aimed to understand the current state of knowledge sharing practices;
- Aimed to create a plan of activities that best addressed practitioners needs and leveraged existing efforts;
- Worked with key stakeholders to develop a project plan and web site.
Practitioners noted that the VS&L methodology had evolved in some of CAREs programs. VS&L methodologies could be more efficiently designed if practitioners could access a knowledge platform and a way to engage with internal specialists.
