Survey Report of Microfinance Institutions Affected by Tsunami
The present state of 41 MFIs in 9 districts struck by the tsunami in Sri Lanka

This report is a survey conducted by the Sri Lanka Business Development Centre (SLBDC), with the financial assistance of GIZ, to assess the situation of the tsunami struck MFIs, through a structured questionnaire and interviews of officials of relevant MFIs. The survey was conducted in 9 districts of the tsunami affected areas for 41 MFIs.
The findings of the survey were:
- Some MFIs were not dealing in microfinance activities, or were not in operation, or could not be included in the survey;
- Some MFIs were with large number of members;
- Loan disbursement is limited to specific sectors only;
- Damage and losses are in all aspects and MFIs require reconstruction and rehabilitation on urgent basis.
The report concludes that:
- Tsunami has hit the MFIs hard;
- MFIs membership is severely affected;
- There is an urgent need for reconstruction and rehabilitation.
