How market building approach reduces the drip irrigation technology price in India?

International Development Enterprises India (IDEI) is a nonprofit enterprise that facilitates income generation for poor Indian farmers. Since 1991, IDEI has been trying to address the problem of irrigation water paucity, in shallow water table areas, by marketing treadle pumps.

This paper describes:

  • The role and impact of the support provided by USAID's Microenterprise Development (MD), to IDEI's Affordable Drip Irrigation Technologies (ADITI) programme;
  • ADITI, which aimed at facilitating a market for drip irrigation technology in Maharashtra, India.

The MD and IDEI partnership focused on:

  • Developing a value chain for drip irrigation involving associated players;
  • Facilitating market linkages to farmers for high-value-added horticulture.

Using a market building approach, ADITI was able to:

  • Improve resource utilization of the poor farmers;
  • Bring about a 50 to 70 percent drop in the price of irrigation technology;
  • Enable the farmers to graduate from subsistence to cash crop farming, and realize income gains of US $200-$400 each, per year.
