The Third Microfinance Survey in the Arab World: Preliminary Results

How can MFIs in Arab world achieve the future projections?

This presentation made at the SANABEL conference, presents the finding of the third survey conducted on microfinance. The author presents the findings on the issues concerning governance, legal structure, and on all microfinance parameters. Some of the key findings that the presentations put forth include the following:

  • Due to exclusion of some microfinance institutions (MFIs), the results of the survey look better than the reality;
  • 17 out of 55 MFIs are close to break even or are breaking even;
  • 20% of the MFIs are for-profit;
  • Most MFIs have active boards;
  • Management changes have made positive impact on the functioning of MFIs;
  • Morocco has the largest number of active clients but Egypt has the largest outstanding loan portfolio.

  • Active Boards of MFIs;
  • Diversified products;
  • Enabling legal environment.
