Studying Group Dynamics: An Alternative Analytical Framework for the Study of Microfinance Impacts on Poverty Reduction

What can an analysis of group dynamics tell about impact and sustainablility?

This paper presents an analytical framework in which the study of group dynamics is central. The method assesses new channels of impact effects on the individuals participating in microfinance schemes, their households, enterprises and communities. The author argues four potential outcomes of this fresh approach to the analysis of poverty impacts  based on positive and negative achievements in financial and organisational sustainability. Finally, the paper concludes that the perspective may have dramatic implications for the way we look at the effectiveness of microfinance today.

The paper also includes:

  • Model of an impact chain;
  • Schematic disgram of group dynamics and sustainability.
