Financial Education for SEWA Bank Members: A Facilitator's Guide

Toolkit on financial literacy for members of MFIs
Download72 pages

This Facilitator’s Guide on financial education for SEWA Bank members aims to assist its urban and rural staff in achieving the goals of SEWA's Project Tomorrow Program.

Project Tomorrow is a financial education program for SEWA Bank members. It helps members gain skills in personal financial planning, make informed decisions about their finances, build their future and live a secure life. Members learn to match their life cycle needs with the various products of SEWA Bank products and those of other formal and informal financial service providers. Given the high rate of illiteracy among members, the guide draws heavily on story telling, posters and metaphors.

The manual trains the trainers in key principles when dealing with adult education, such as respecting the students’ experience and knowledge, and ensuring relevance of the training content and activities to the students’ lives. The manual has seven learning sessions built around the following topics:

  • Introduction to financial planning;
  • Daily money management practices;
  • Planning for future events;
  • Savings and investment;
  • Borrowing and loan management;
  • Insurance and risk management;
  • Making a financial plan.
