Reducing impact of HIV/AIDS on microenterprise development
Download5 pages

This study analyzes the economic impact of HIV/AIDS on microenterprise development in Obunga slum, Kisumu, Kenya.

The performances of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have stagnated in the last two decades in Kenya due to the emergence of HIV/AIDS. Kenyan youth, who are a part of the primary work force, are succumbing to the disease. Most SMEs in the Obunga slum are facing severe economic crises and are being shut down due to the dearth of skilled workers. The study was carried out between June 2008 and June 2009. Findings confirmed that HIV/AIDS has a highly depleting effect on microenterprises. The study recommends that programs should:

  • Focus on situational interventions and enabling approaches reflecting needs of microenterprise staff;
  • Enlighten microenterprise workforce on their personal susceptibility to HIV/AIDS;
  • Improve and broaden access to social activities for workers;
  • Improve sanitation and general hygiene in slums;
  • Establish a donors and stakeholder information forum on microenterprise and HIV/AIDS and identify best practices.

It is necessary to improve the socioeconomic environment, mobilize donors and stakeholders in training and funding, and review current strategies for addressing impact of HIV/AIDS on microenterprise development.
