A Microfinance Institution Expands Its Services to Protect Clients' Health

Has CRECER achieved the double bottom line providing cohesive health protection services to clients?

This paper describes the health protection package offered by CRECER, a Bolivian MFI. It describes the economic and health context that prompted CRECER to offer health protection services to its clients. Its health protection package includes:

  • Mobile doctors providing primary care and diagnostic services;
  • Collective health loans to pay for mobile doctor consultations;
  • Referrals to higher-level medical care when needed;
  • Individual health loans to pay for major medical expenses.

CRECER also provides complementary education on womens health, planning ahead for health expenses, using local healthcare systems, and prevention and management of common diseases.
