Download4 pages

This paper discusses the functioning of the Dharamveer self help group (SHG) and the assistance provided to it by the Gramin Vikas Trust (GVT). The features of this SHG were:

  • It was formed by 14 farmers who needed access to savings and credit;
  • The class and caste structure of the group was homogeneous;
  • The group members decided to save Rs.5 every month to make a group fund;
  • Thereafter, saving-credit-lending was continuous.

The paper then discusses the linkages established by the SHG in order to reduce the inequalities in the social system. This was done with the assistance of the Gramin Vikas Trust. The linkages were:

  • GVT helped to build a livelihood support system by providing:
    • Rs. 10,000 for income generating activities;
    • A rented out pump set was to earn income;
    • Funds for a goatery and dockery project;
    • High yielding paddy seed variety;
    • Exposure visits and training.
  • The SHG also built up linkages with the Bank of India, DRDA, the Nehru Yubak Kendra, the State Welfare Board and the State Civil Supply Corporation, each of which contributed funds, granted loans, provided training and helped in building institutional strength and capacity.

The paper concludes by stating that:

  • The leadership of the SHG was efficient and effective;
  • Linkages to various governmental and non-governmental organizations increased the institutional strength;
  • Regular capacity building by the GVT turned the group into a stable SHG;
  • The group members clearly understood the advantages of SHG formation.
