CLUSA: Addressing the concerns of small and marginal farmers
Download16 pages

This case study initially describes the effect of economy on the farmers of Zambia over the decades. It then describes how the out grower credit scheme, managed by CLUSA, addresses the critical, but missing link between the farmers and agri-businesses.

The CLUSA program was initiated in 1996 to provide loans to agricultural business projects. It then moved on to an out grower program in 1998.

The case study describes:

  • Changes in funding structure over the years;
  • Financial products offered;
  • Management of credit;
  • Different models, followed by advantages and disadvantages of each;
  • Comparison with other distributor systems;
  • Results and Impact.

The document then lists down the results learnt in implementing the program and provides suggestions in overcoming the challenges in the future.
