Case Study

The Private Sector and Development: Five Case Studies (Vol.1)

Has IFC's investments made a contribution to economic growth in its host countries?

This document presents five individual case studies of companies and financial institutions in which the International Finance Corporation (IFC) has made investments. These cases span a broad range of investments:

  • Aquaculture de la Mahajamba, Madagascar: a company created to produce and process shrimp in a remote area;
  • Arguas Argentinas: the first privatisation of a large water and sewerage company in Argentina;
  • P.T. South Pacific Viscose, Indonesia: textile production;
  • The Bank of Africa, Benin, and Banco Industrial S.A.;
  • Bolivia: financial institutions.

It illustrates how private projects, when structured appropriately, can contribute to the growth and well being of their host countries. An annex provides data in summary form from a wide sample of IFC projects.
