Download 72 pages

This report aims to create a database of CARE International‘s microinsurance projects and build knowledge and understanding of the sector.

The report gathers examples of microinsurance from Asia and Africa, where CARE International is predominantly focused. Findings include:

  • Most of CARE’s microinsurance projects are in Asia;
  • Bajaj Allianz and CARE India have partnered to develop a three year scheme to provide microinsurance to over 100,000 people in Tamil Nadu, India, a state that was severely affected by the Tsunami;
  • CARE has innovated to pilot a project that provides insurance to small scale salt farmers in India in order to protect them from untimely rainfall;
  • Bajaj Allianz and CARE set up a community based micro health insurance program called Mutuals, that helps to share risks collectively;
  • CARE established a community mutual model called Jeevodhayam that provides life insurance to people living with HIV and AIDS.

The report also discusses how microinsurance can be used as a safety net to deal with climate change. It presents examples from various countries of projects that deal with risk coping strategies in the face of adverse weather events. Finally, the report provides lessons on creating a microinsurance pilot project.
