Food Security Study: Identifying Trends of Food Consumption of Group Lending Microfinance Clients

This report examines food consumption patterns amongst Kashf Foundation's group lending clients by analyzing survey results of 100 households (HHs) across ten branches in Punjab, Pakistan. The questionnaire used identifiers such as:

  • Incidence of procuring groceries;
  • Monthly HH food budget;
  • Sources of food purchase;
  • Burden of food prices and countering measures used;
  • Frequency of meat consumption.

Findings reveal that:

  • Most food buying is done on a monthly basis;
  • Median monthly food budget is around Rs. 6,250;
  • Most respondents purchase food from the local general store;
  • Current food prices placed a burden on HHs, with food budget taking up 60 -70 percent of earnings;
  • Some respondents experienced days in the last year when they had gone hungry;
  • A typical meal includes pulses, vegetables and cereals or grains, meat and dairy products;
  • Coping strategies include eating less, taking loans, decreasing other expenses, establishing other businesses and working longer hours.
