Issues of Extending MIS Software to Community Based Financial Institutions
What are the challenges of implementing MIS at NGO MFIs?

This report narrates CARE's experience in extending MIS solutions to its partner NGOs under its CASHE project. According to the report CARE identified six softwares, of which it had first hand experience with three. However, there were problems related to training, on site technical support and customization. CARE suggests the following precautions while choosing a software:
- Choose a provider available closest to the operational area;
- Negotiate for separate costs of installation and customization;
- Differentiate between customization of software and handholding support;
- Set a time-frame for the support;
- Release payment on the basis of performance and satisfaction.
It encountered the following problems in MIS support:
- In availability of accurate and complete data;
- Issues related to adaptation/customization;
- Lack of skilled staff;
- Power fluctuations and virus;
- Unwillingness to disclose all financial information;
- Limited budget for software support;
- Capturing of SHG related data;
- Inability of the management to analyze and use the data.
