Microfinance in the New Millennium: Efficiency, Customer Satisfaction, and Commercialization

What changes is microfinance experiencing at the turn of the century?

The microfinance industry has recently experienced significant developments in technique, methodology, and outreach, all of which are contributing to a changing landscape for MFIs. The three themes of this 1999 conference, Efficiency, Customer Satisfaction, and Commercialization (the application of market-based principles to microfinance) can create new possibilities for the field:

  • A focus on efficiency can lead to enhanced services and customer satisfaction;
  • Commercialization can serve as a vehicle to increase the outreach of services in a sustainable manner.
