The Subsector Methodology: A Field Orientation for CARE/Egypt, January 20 to February 7, 1992

Applying the subsector methodology to get information on credit markets in Egypt

This study describes the partnership between CARE, Egypt and Growth and Equity Through Microenterprise Investments and Institutions (GEMINI) Project in analyzing the credit provided by formal and informal lending institutions to micro, small and medium enterprises in Egypt. CARE, Egypt requested GEMINI Project to support its Community Initiated Development (CID) program in July 1991.

CARE wanted help with an assessment of the rural economic network in four governorates. A GEMINI trainer trained CARE staff, through a mixture of classroom exercises and fieldwork. The study aimed to:

  • Define types of markets for credit and their sizes;
  • Identify channels supplying credit and providing support services;
  • Identify sources of capital provided to channels, by donor agencies and savings;
  • Assess types of relationships among these institutions.

The training exercise helped both GEMINI and CARE learn valuable lessons and develop concrete products. It helped GEMINI to transmit new methodological developments to CARE, prepare four subsector analyses for use by CARE field staff, get feedback on the usefulness of the tool to field operators and its optimal applications at the field level, and learn from CARE staff.
