This document presents a review of the Multilateral Investment Fund’s (MIF) remittance program since its inception in 2000.

The review focuses primarily on the portfolio of remittance projects undertaken by the MIF from 2001 to 2009. It also examines MIF’s research and dissemination activities during that same period. The review aims to provide MIF and others interested in expanding their knowledge on remittance projects with an historical overview of MIF’s experience in this area.

The review is based on face-to-face interviews with MIF staff members, visits to executing agencies, telephone interviews of MIF country staff and project coordinators, and review of documents on MIF remittance activities. The document includes:

  • Assessment of MIF’s models;
  • Summary of each individual project’s successes, challenges and lessons learned;
  • Recommendations from the design and operational perspectives, on how MIF and other practitioners can improve impact, reach and sustainability of remittance programs.
