Download 26 pages

This study assesses the sustainability of Dumarwana Small Farmers’ Cooperative Limited (SFCL) in terms of its operational and financial performance, social performance and its impact on local communities.

Dumarwana SFCL is fully owned, managed and controlled by local poor and marginalized farmers. It operates in Dumarwana and Pipra Simra. Study findings reveal that Dumarwana SFCL:

  • Is one of the best MFIs in Nepal in terms of its outreach, expansion, financial sustainability and impact;
  • Has significantly contributed to the socioeconomic transformation of poor communities;
  • Has brought about social harmony and a sense of belonging among its diverse community, especially women members;
  • Proves that transparency and social inclusion are the key ingredients to make any organization conflict-sensitive.

Finally, the paper makes recommendations for further improving the viability and sustainability of Dumarwana SFCL.
